Winter Field Note
The team at Walhalla Farm is quite busy this winter. Farm work doesn’t stop for any weather, no matter how cold it gets!
Our most exciting news: we’ve added a new animal to the farm! We’re excited to introduce you to Harvey Meagan Milk, a one year-old Hereford heifer. Meagan’s pronouns are she/they, and her current hobbies include chilling on warm hay in the dairy barn and munching winter grass in the brand new paddock.
Harvey Meagan has kept us on our toes since her arrival. She’s been affectionately nicknamed Moodini, as she’s found every weak spot in our fencing setup and has Basil, Andrew and every farmer within 5 miles of Walhalla chasing her through cornfields. We appreciate the help of our wonderful neighbors this past month, who were kind enough to aid us in gently guiding Meagan back home.
With the help of one neighbor, Todd, and several experienced former dairy farmers, we’ve finally secured her winter area as escape-proof.
Before Harvey Meagan’s arrival, Basil and his daughter Goldie worked to clean up and restore a stall in the dairy barn.
Basil and Jenna’s wife Lucy worked to clear ground and prepare the fence for Harvey’s Paddock.
This past week we repaired a second stall in the dairy barn to prepare for the arrival of TWO more farm animals! The old stall was falling over and missing several key components. New pipes were cut to fit the stall hardware, straps were used to bend the metal back into shape, and every piece was taken apart to create new spacing and secure the stall.
We are currently cleaning, painting and adding goat fencing to this stall, as these two new Walhalla family members will arrive this weekend. That’s right- two lovely rescue goats will soon call the farm home! They’ll be companions to Harvey Meagan, as well as any goat-loving artist residents who come to the farm this spring for our next New Roots residency!
