Artists Testimonials

  • Walhalla is such a gift for creative spirits. Walking around the farm for the first time, you'll probably be like "haha no this literally isn't real" but it actually literally is. There is no better place to recharge your spirit and no better people to help facilitate your experience. The gathering and living spaces are so cozy and picturesque. And there are plenty of sweet nooks & work spaces.

Mahayla Laurence - Producer CAMP Ars Nova comedy group

  • Walhalla Farm is private, rural, and quaint, which of course translates into writer-speak as “I’ll finally be able to hear my own thoughts here.” It’s utterly restorative. Even if you don’t write during your stay, you’ll be able to clear your head and assemble yourself to write once you’re back home. After all, it’s so much easier to write when you feel like you’re in a movie montage about a writer finally finishing their work. There's a line in my journal from my stay about wishing I could see myself from the third-person, jumping around with my laptop to all the scenic writing spots. Whatever your writing style, every inch of the cottage can be turned into the perfect spot to plop down and write (or at least think about writing). Ely and Basil are warm, kind, and all-around lovely writers, parents, and humans.

  • My residency at Walhalla Farm was magical. Writing in the cottage looking out at the cornfields, walking under the shade trees -- I got a big chunk of work done on the revision of my play JUMP THE SHARK. This is the first queer residency I have ever done in my life, and it was witchy and wonderful -- including watching bats fly over the trees sitting in a hot tub! Basil and Ely, their two kids Goldie and Birdy, dog Moishe and growing menagerie (they got a bunch of baby chicks while I was there!) are welcoming and engaged in their own artmaking which contributes to the creative energy that pulses through the landscape. Please support this important program that is making rural space safe and accessible to queer and trans artists. We need programs like New Roots that are building bridges with community now more than ever!
